City Sail is a dynamic four-week summer program introducing urban youth to sailing and swimming. It is New Jersey’s only FREE sailing program, serving middle and high school students from New City Kids: Jersey City.

Our students begin their sailing journey by learning the basics of sailing and taking an introductory swimming course at a local university. They work in small teams over the course of the program, engaging in team-building activities and STEM projects which enhance their sailing and swimming skills.

Students have fun competing in knot-tying contests, testing their sailing vocabulary and knowledge, and becoming competent swimmers. But most importantly, they get out on the water and sail!  The program culminates in a Long Island Sound overnight sailing trip for top performers.

75% of participants had never been on a boat

83% of participants achieved basic swimming ability

In 2019, 36 middle and high school students were enrolled

10 volunteers provided boats and sailing instruction

With the help of generous volunteers who provide sailing instruction and their own boats for our use, City Sail offers our students access to sailing on the Hudson.
