Loving kids for change to create a community of academic, leadership, musical, and spiritual development.
New City Kids offers after school programming for local low-income youth. Children and teens get a chance to explore music and academics in a creative and fun environment. Though there are many challenges of urban life, especially for youth, these programs give children a safe place to feel and hear that they are valued and loved. New City Kids aims to draw children into hope by developing in them skills, talents, and desires for their future. By surrounding them with a community of love and development, we strive to set youth on a path of transformation that will carry them forward for the rest of their lives.
How We Got Our Start
Trevor Rubingh and his wife Linda Rubingh met at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1990. There, the two discovered their mutual passion to bring God’s love, justice and abundance to the brokenness of the world. It was during those early conversations that they began to dream about doing something new. They were each ordained and commissioned as church planters in 1994. Following after, they began to focus exclusively on children and teens by starting New City Kids Church in 1996 in Jersey City, NJ. While the once-a-week program reached nearly 300 children each week, the Rubinghs saw very little change in the childrens’ day to day lives. In 2005, they transitioned to a performing arts-driven, academic-focused after school programming structure, meeting five days a week. This, with paid internships for teenagers, who were and still are the teachers and tutors in the classrooms, caused New City Kids to turn a remarkable corner. For the last eight years, 100% of New City high school graduates have gone to college, breaking the cycle of poverty in their communities and bringing holistic change in their lives.
